Chemical Damp-Proof Course Treatment for Existing Buildings

Chemical DPC Injection for Rising Damp in Uganda

Can Rising Damp Be Treated Without Rebuilding the Wall?

Yes. In suitable masonry, an existing building can often receive a remedial damp-proof course without dismantling the wall.

Chemical Damp-Proof Course Treatment for Existing Buildings

One common method uses an injectable damp-proofing cream such as Dryzone or an equivalent approved system.

Small holes are drilled into an appropriate mortar joint and the damp-proofing cream is introduced into the masonry.

The material disperses within the mortar and cures to create a water-repellent barrier designed to interrupt capillary moisture movement.

The Treatment Process

Before injection begins, the wall should first be assessed to confirm that rising damp is actually present.

The contractor should investigate:

  • external ground level;
  • existing DPC position;
  • wall thickness;
  • condition of mortar;
  • plumbing leaks;
  • rainwater drainage;
  • plaster contamination; and
  • previous repairs.

Once the injection line is selected, holes are drilled according to the technical requirements of the chosen system.

The damp-proofing cream is then injected into the mortar joint.

However, injection alone is often not the entire repair.

Ground salts carried into the wall by moisture may remain inside existing plaster. Some salts are hygroscopic, meaning they can continue attracting moisture from the atmosphere.

Affected plaster may therefore need to be removed and replaced with a compatible salt-resistant system.

The wall also requires time to dry.

Why Diagnosis Matters

Chemical DPC injection will not solve every damp problem.

If the actual source is:

  • leaking plumbing;
  • roof leakage;
  • defective gutters;
  • penetrating rainwater;
  • condensation; or
  • groundwater entering through a basement wall,

a different solution may be required.

This is why Tetrabuild's approach focuses on diagnosing the water path before recommending treatment.
